Traffic Cone Size Guide: 12, 18, 28 & 36 Inch
Cone height isn’t just about visibility — it changes weight, stability, and how the cone reads at a distance. Here’s what each standard size is actually for, so your custom order fits the job.
The four standard heights
| Height | Typical use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 12″ | Indoor, tabletop, sports drills, kids’ zones | Light, stackable, easy to carry in bulk |
| 18″ | Pedestrian queues, low-speed foot traffic | Visible without being bulky |
| 28″ | Parking, events, general roadway | The all-purpose size; meets many road specs |
| 36″ | Highways, vehicle traffic, perimeter | Maximum visibility; heavier base for wind |
Weight and base matter
Taller cones need a heavier base to stay upright in wind and wake from passing vehicles. A 28″ or 36″ cone with a weighted rubber base resists tipping; lighter all-PVC cones are easier to haul for indoor or drill use where wind isn’t a factor. Tell us the environment and we’ll match the base.
How height affects branding
More cone means more print area. A 28″ or 36″ cone gives a printed collar room to carry a full logo lockup that reads from across a lot; on a 12″ cone, keep the mark simple. If your design is detailed, size up or move to a collar.
Picking your size
Most customers order one workhorse height (usually 28″) and a smaller size for tight or indoor spaces. If cones serve more than one purpose, a mixed order is common and we’ll price the heights together. When in doubt, tell us the setting and the speed of nearby traffic — that determines the right height every time.
