Screen-Print vs. Printed Collars: Choosing a Custom Cone Method
There are two main ways to make a traffic cone “custom,” and they produce very different results. Screen-printing bonds your logo directly onto the cone body or base. A printed collar is a full-color sleeve that wraps around the cone. Picking the right one comes down to how much artwork you have and how loud you want it.
Neither is better in the abstract — they solve different problems. Here’s how to choose.
When screen-printing wins
Choose screen-printing when the mark is simple: a one- or two-color logo, a company name, or a phone number. It’s permanent — the ink bonds to the PVC so it won’t peel like a sticker — and it’s the most cost-effective method at higher quantities. Ideal for construction fleets, schools, and anyone who wants their name on the cone without a lot of fuss.
When printed collars win
Choose a printed collar when the artwork is the point: full-color logos, photos, gradients, sponsor lockups, or a design that needs to wrap all the way around. Collars turn a cone into signage and read from a distance, which is why they’re the go-to for events, brand activations, and film. They also let you reuse the same stock cones and just swap collars between jobs.
Side by side
| Factor | Screen-printing | Printed collar |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Simple logos, names, fleet ID | Full-color art, photos, sponsors |
| Look | Clean, permanent, understated | Loud, graphic, wraps 360° |
| Durability | Bonded to PVC — won’t peel | Heavy-duty sleeve — swappable |
| Color freedom | 1–2 spot colors economical | Unlimited, incl. photo and Pantone |
| Reusability | Fixed to the cone | Swap collars, reuse cones |
Choosing for your order
If your audience should remember the company, screen-print. If they should remember the design — or it’s a sponsored, photographed moment — use a collar. Plenty of programs do both: screen-printed base cones for everyday use, printed collars for the events that matter. When you request a quote, tell us the use and we’ll recommend the method and show it on a real cone in your free mockup.
